Bucked Shins/Dorsal Cortical Fractures of the Third Metatarsal Bone in Horses

By Jane C. Boswell, MA, VetMB, CertVA, CertES (Orth), DECVS, MRCVS, The Liphook Equine Hospital

Modelling and stress remodelling of the dorsal cortex of the third metatarsal bone occur in young racehorses but, unlike in the third metacarpal bone, it is rarely associated with clinical signs of lameness. Dorsal cortical fractures of the third metatarsal bone are rare but may occur in Thoroughbred or Standardbred racehorses.
