Enostosis-like Lesions of the Third Metatarsal Bone in Horses

By Jane C. Boswell, MA, VetMB, CertVA, CertES (Orth), DECVS, MRCVS, The Liphook Equine Hospital

Enostosis-like lesions of the third metatarsal bone appear as intense focal areas of increased uptake of radionuclide on scintigraphic examination after injection of 99mTc–labelled methylene diphosphonate. Radiologically, they appear as round or irregularly shaped areas of increased radiopacity within the medullary cavity. They are usually asymptomatic and rarely cause lameness. Lameness, if present, usually improves with rest and administration of NSAIDs.
